My maid of honor is coming to visit this weekend from DC. We haven’t seen each other since her wedding reception/party in New York almost two years ago. I can’t believe how quickly time flies.

MOH is going to help with wedding stuff, or at least that’s the plan. I don’t have any envelopes that need to be addressed or goodies that need to be stuffed into welcome bags yet, but I have some other tasks that I could use a hand with. The one that sticks out foremost in my mind is finding a dress for my mother to wear.

But wait—shouldn’t I be doing that with my mom? Good question. Here’s the deal. My mom and I don’t live near each other, so it’s not possible for me to just get in my car (that is, if I had one) and meet up with her for some weekend shopping. We need to make plans way in advance to do that because it involves her buying a plane ticket, traveling, and maybe putting the dog in the kennel. She’ll do that eventually, but in the mean time she’s on the lookout for potential mother of the bride dresses where she lives. And because I still need to decide what color she’ll be wearing, I need to do the same. If and when I find something for her, I’ll probably just take a picture of it and email her the details.

If that sounds complicated, it is. I also think my mom is hesitant to go dress shopping with me. In her mind, it’s stressful. And memories of dress shopping for my brother’s wedding are no doubt flying at her full speed. I helped her shop for a dress then and I remember that she didn’t like anything she tried on. To be fair, she was given a very specific color to wear and it wasn’t exactly easy to find something that matched my sister-in-law’s description. Now that it’s my turn to pick a color and approve a dress, I think my mom is worried that I’m going to veto everything she picks out. Ahh! I think she wants to pick something that she likes and feels comfortable in and then hope I’ll like it, too. I’m not sure that’s how this is supposed to work, but for now, I’m biting my tongue. And doing my own shopping for her.

In addition to wedding business, I’m hoping MOH and I can take care of some cocktail business, too. I’ve been dying to check out this place because I’ve seen it in person and it looks cool, plus the drinks are supposed to be really good. Who can resist?
